Summary
A roof install technician, also known as a roofer or roofing contractor, is responsible for installing,
repairing, and maintaining the roofs of buildings using a variety of materials such as shingles, metal
panels, or tiles. The role is physically demanding and requires a strong understanding of safety protocols
and building codes.
Key responsibilities
Removing old or damaged roofing systems and debris from the worksite.
Installing new roofing materials, including vapor barriers, insulation, ventilation, shingles, asphalt, metal,
or other specific systems, to ensure the roof is weatherproof.
Cutting and shaping materials to fit around obstacles such as chimneys, vents, and walls.
Sealing joints, nail heads, and other potential leak points with roofing cement or caulk.
Setting up and dismantling scaffolding, ladders, and hoisting equipment safely.
Following all safety protocols and local building codes and regulations.
Communicating effectively with supervisors regarding job progress and any issues encountered.
Skills and Qualifications
- Tool Proficiency: Experience using various hand and power tools, such as hammers, nail guns, roofing
shovels, and tin snips.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulousness is essential to align materials correctly and ensure the roof is
properly sealed.
- Basic Math Skills: Needed to measure and calculate the size of the roof and material quantities.
- Experience/Training: While no formal education is typically required, most learn on the job or through
an apprenticeship program.
- Valid Driver's License: Often required to travel between different job sites.
Work Environment
- Physical Strength and Stamina: The ability to lift heavy materials (often 50 pounds or more) and endure
bending, kneeling, and standing for long periods, often in extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to Work at Heights: Comfort and excellent balance are crucial when working on steep slopes and
great heights to avoid falls.
- Manual Dexterity: Precision in handling and installing materials to prevent damage and ensure a quality,
waterproof finish.
- Teamwork: Ability to work with the installation team to accomplish all tasks in a timely manner.
